AI goes aunty mode

AI-generated videos of aging characters expressing regret at not getting married and paying heed to their parents’ advice are flooding social media platforms like Douyin and Weibo in China, as the country faces a 20.5 per cent year-on-year decrease in the number of marriages registered.
In one video, the protagonist is lying alone in a hospital bed at the age of 58 . Other patients around her are shown being cared for by their family members. Another shows a 56-year-old woman expressing regret at her decision of remaining unmarried and childless. Despite being explicitly tagged as “AI generated”, these videos continue to go viral.

These videos are criticised for deepening social divisions between married and unmarried individuals. Parents, however, double down as they insist on carrying out what they describe as a ‘cyber siege’, to get their children married off.
Comments under these clips range from “We need more of these videos. Let us see who still insists on staying single,” and “Everyone, spread these clips and let these young people watch,” to “It’s quite funny that they used AI, because they couldn’t find a real person to cry and urge people to get married.”Young people have responded generally negatively, with most finding this trend hilarious. They say that this trend will make single people frustrated and  not marry out of spite.
A filmy affair

A 42-year-old Italian man has filed a lawsuit after his wife discovered him with another woman in a TikTok video posted by a restaurant. The man had earlier told his wife that he was attending a business meeting. Upon spotting her husband’s public infidelity, the woman kicked him out of the house and ended her relationship with him. The man, after figuring out that the restaurant revealed his affair, claimed that his right to privacy had been violated. He is represented by Codacons, an Italian consumer protection association, which says that the restaurant is in the wrong for filming content without the consumer’s consent.

A woman in the United States blends her food and snorts it using a straw, claiming that it’s better than having it the traditional way. She reportedly started this habit five years ago after being dared to snort a flavoured food drink. After doctors warned her of the related risks, she says that she has ‘cut back’ on it.
Fortunes that cost a phone
A fortune teller in Thailand was arrested after stealing a woman’s phone to confirm his predictions for her. The soothsayer had claimed that she would lose a valuable item. She later realised that her phone was missing, and found it with him inside a box. What a misfortune!
