As you may recall from firsthand knowledge, colorful pants were a huge trend in the early 2010s. They’ve mostly disappeared in recent years… but we’re seeing a TON come out right now. So let’s discuss: how can you wear colorful pants in 2026 (without looking like 2011 called and wants its pants back)?
I have a few ideas — but readers, how are you wearing colorful work pants? Would you advise caution to a newer worker
How to Wear Colorful Pants in 2026: Work Outfit Ideas
Wear Colorful Pants with two neutrals.
LaLigne
I love this trick in general — if wearing “red pant + black shirt” feels too Star Trek or whatnot to you, try adding gray, white, or tan. Two neutrals somehow always looks better than just one by itself.
You can see it here with the cobalt pants from LaLigne, as well as these hot red jeans from Spanx with a white tee and gray sweater, or these ochre trousers at Veronica Beard with an ivory tank and beige belt. You can even wear black and navy together as your two neutrals, as seen at Ann Taylor with these medium blue pants, navy blouse, and black belt.
Wear Colorful Pants With a Matching Top (or Blazer)
J.Crew
Wearing a colorful but monotonous look is always a sophisticated way to do it — the trick is finding matching pieces. Thankfully, that’s pretty easy these days at a lot of retailers — Ann Taylor, Argent, and The Fold in particular have a lot of suiting trousers with matching blazers, blouses, and knits. (Love this summer plum trouser with matching top at The Fold.)
(And of course as I write this, the sweater pictured with the J.Crew trousers is sold out — here’s a link to the product page if you want to call the store near you to ask if they still have it.)
Wear Colorful Work Pants With Colors In the Same Shade
Reiss
Wearing shades of the same color can be a really sophisticated look also — for example, take these hot pink trousers with a dark burgundy blouse from Reiss. I think the burgundy gives it just a bit more interest than a plain black blouse would have.
Another example of this: hot pink pants with a pale pink blouse, as styled at Boden.
How NOT to Wear Colorful Pants in 2026
You can wear them however you want — but if you’re sensitive about it or associate colorful pants with a very specific time in history, you may want to avoid wearing them:
with multiple colors (sky blue with red, purple with green, neon yellow with cobalt)… I remember hearing at the time that you should wear black with black, and color with color.
with stripes — another popular casual outfit at the time would have been colorful pants, a striped Breton top, and a colorful statement necklace (like the J.Crew bubble necklace!)
with anything chevron or a tiny repeating handdrawn pattern such as arrows
with silver heels, a colorful statement necklace like the J.Crew bubble necklace, or a cardigan with a belt on top.
Readers, what are your thoughts? How did you previously wear colorful pants to work — and how are you wearing colorful pants in 2026?
