Donald Trump dials PM Modi; briefs him on West Asia crisis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a detailed phone conversation on Tuesday, reviewing bilateral ties and discussing the evolving situation in West Asia, with a focus on ensuring stability in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The call, which lasted over 40 minutes, marked the third interaction between the two leaders this year and came amid renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
Focus on West Asia crisis and Strait of Hormuz
During the conversation, Trump briefed PM Modi on the latest developments in West Asia, including ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
Both leaders emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and stability, particularly keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure, given its significance for global energy supplies and trade.

In a social media post, PM Modi said the two sides discussed regional developments and reiterated their shared commitment to safeguarding critical maritime routes.
Review of India-US strategic partnership
The leaders also reviewed the progress made in strengthening India-US relations across sectors. PM Modi highlighted the “substantial progress” achieved in bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed India’s commitment to further deepening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
According to US envoy Sergio Gor, both countries are expected to finalise several “big-ticket” agreements in the coming weeks, particularly in the energy sector, although specific details were not disclosed.
Renewed engagement after recent diplomatic efforts
The conversation followed recent diplomatic engagements aimed at stabilising ties between the two nations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had recently concluded a three-day visit to Washington, where discussions focused on key areas of cooperation.
Relations between the two countries had witnessed some strain in recent months due to trade-related issues and differences over regional matters. However, both sides have since taken steps to repair and strengthen the partnership.
Series of calls signal growing coordination
Tuesday’s call follows earlier conversations between Modi and Trump on February 2 and March 24, where the leaders discussed trade negotiations and regional security issues, respectively.
The continued dialogue reflects a growing level of coordination between New Delhi and Washington on strategic and economic matters.
High-level visit expected next month
Further momentum in bilateral ties is expected with the upcoming visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to India next month.
Rubio is scheduled to hold wide-ranging discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other senior officials, covering key aspects of defence, trade, and regional security.
