A 65-year-old man killed his two minor grandsons and seriously injured his wife and daughter-in-law for not offering prayers in Pakistan’s Punjab province, police said on Monday.
The incident took place at Ghausia Colony in the Mamukanjan town of Faisalabad district, around 150 kilometres from provincial capital Lahore, on Saturday night.
The accused, Shah Muhammad — described by his kin as a “religious fanatic” — often quarrelled with his family members over forcing them to observe prayer five times a day, according to police.
“On Saturday night, Shah had a fight with his wife, Asia Bibi, and daughter-in-law Humaira over not offering Isha (evening prayers). As the verbal spat grew, Shah picked up a chopper and attacked both of them. In an extreme fit of rage, he also chopped his two minor grandsons — Nabil (6) and Adeel (5), killing them on the spot,” police said.
The police said he was eventually overpowered by neighbours and handed over to them.
Asia and Humaira were admitted to a hospital, where their condition is stated to be “very critical”, they added.
Nadeem Shah, son of the accused, told police that his father would impose unnecessary restrictions on the family members.
“He would get angry very quickly over minor things. He was a religious fanatic who never allowed female members of his family to use a mobile phone and was always keen to discipline the family according to his understanding of religion,” Nadeem told police.
Police have filed a case on charges of murder and attempted murder against Shah Muhammad.
