US-Israel-Iran war highlights: Iran-US talks in doubt as Hormuz crisis deepens

Fresh violence linked to the ongoing conflict involving United States, Israel and Iran has cast uncertainty over a planned new round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran, even as diplomatic efforts intensify ahead of a fragile ceasefire deadline.
Pakistan on Monday continued preparations to host the talks in Islamabad, scheduled just days before the current truce is set to expire. However, renewed hostilities around the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz have raised doubts about whether the meeting will proceed.
Tensions escalate ahead of planned talks
The latest escalation follows a weekend incident in which the US intercepted and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel, alleging it had attempted to bypass an American blockade on Iranian ports. Tehran condemned the move, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warning that such actions signalled Washington’s lack of sincerity ahead of negotiations.
Pakistan has stepped up diplomatic outreach to both sides over the past 24 hours, aiming to keep the talks on track. While some Iranian officials have indicated a willingness to participate, Tehran has stopped short of confirming its attendance.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said no final decision had been taken regarding the talks, though he did not rule out participation.
Strait of Hormuz at centre of global concern
The conflict has once again drawn attention to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. Iran had earlier restricted maritime traffic in the region following joint US-Israel strikes that marked the beginning of the current war.
The US has also enforced a blockade on Iranian ports, further complicating shipping routes and global supply chains.
Rising casualties across the region
According to Iran’s Legal Medicine Organisation, at least 3,375 people have been killed in Iran since the conflict began. The toll includes hundreds of children, though no detailed breakdown between civilians and military personnel has been provided.
Casualties have also been reported across the wider region, including in Lebanon and Israel, as well as among US military personnel deployed in the Middle East.
Oil prices surge amid renewed conflict
Global oil markets have reacted sharply to the instability. Prices had briefly stabilised following a temporary reopening of the strait and a short-lived truce involving Iran-backed groups in Lebanon.
However, renewed tensions – including the US seizure of the Iranian vessel and Tehran’s threats to tighten maritime restrictions – have pushed prices higher again. Brent crude rose to around USD 95 per barrel, marking a significant increase since the start of the war.
Iranian leadership has warned that continued pressure could prolong economic disruption, with hundreds of vessels reportedly waiting for clearance at both ends of the strait.
Israel condemns incident involving soldier
Separately, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned an incident in Lebanon where an Israeli soldier was seen vandalising a statue of Jesus Christ. The Israeli military confirmed the authenticity of images circulating online, triggering widespread criticism.
The episode comes amid a delicate ceasefire in Lebanon, where clashes between Israeli forces and Iran-backed Hezbollah had intensified regional tensions and complicated broader diplomatic efforts.
The situation remains fluid, with the fate of the proposed Iran–US talks hinging on developments in the coming days as military and diplomatic pressures continue to collide.
